Nota Bene calendar 2021 - Favourite books and book characters.

For 2021 calendar Nota Bene* sellers told about their favourite books and book characters they admired as children. When working on this project it occurred to me that many of sellers found security, understanding or inspiration in the books and book characters that they haven’t had otherwise in their lives.

*Nota Bene is a Slovak street paper that working on ending homelessness in Slovakia.

Viera, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: folktale “Salt over gold”.

 

January

As a little girl Viera loved the fairy tale “Salt over gold”. Her favourite character was Maruška, who had it all clear with salt, gold and her ladder of values, which ultimately complicated her life. From her childhood, Vierka remembers those joyfully simple times when she played princesses and ate sweets. Even today, she likes to indulge in sweets and relaxes best when painting anti-stress coloring books.

Favourite book: “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” by Jules Verne.

 

February

As a kid little Zdenek loved the travelogues and Jules Verne’s books. He often takes inspiration from books into everyday life. For example, from the last book by Daniel Pastircak, he took to heart the phrase, "and he abstained from a comment"- because abstaining from a comment is sometimes the best thing that can be done.

Fredy, NOTA BENE seller.

Favorite book: “The Boys of Paul street” by Ferenc Molnar.

 

March

As a child, Fredy liked the book Boys of Paul Street. He couldn't go out very much because he was either learning or helping his parents at home, and through the story of the book, Fredy got friends. The book is set in Budapest at the end of the 19th century, where two groups of boys are fighting for a free yard to play football. Fredy is currently studying for a certified translator. During the first wave of the corona crisis, in addition to his studies, he translated a book and sewed a cloth masks for his colleagues - the sellers of the magazine.

Fredy is a shy person an didn’t want his face to be in the calendar, so this is why he peeks at us from over the book.

Zuzana, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: “Poem of a Big Hunger” by Lubomir Feldek.

 

April

The poem is about a boy who built a castle out of food under the table and told his grandmother that he had a "hunger". Grandma brought him more and more food until she realized that her grandson just couldn't pronounce "r." (In Slovak the word for castle is “hrad” while the word for a hunger “hlad”). Zuzana competed with this poem in a school recitation competition as a child.

Zuzana is portrayed with closed eyes as she is a visually impaired.

Alena, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: “The Grandmother” by Bozena Nemcova.

 

May

As a child, Alena liked to read the book “The Grandmother”. She liked the figure of the grandmother for her wisdom, peace and composure. She often returned to the book also because she did not experience much peace at home. The grandmother's character helped her to find a sense of security at a time when she had to deal with screams and quarrels at home. Today, Alena is herself the grandmother of a beautiful grandson.

Favourite book: “Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren.

 

June

The Pippi Longstocking, with magical illustrations by Peter Kľúčik, was the first book Little Sandra read. As a child, she longed to have freckles and to be like a Pippi - brave, free-spirited, madly unruly, generous and compassionate to others. Sandra loves the hot tub, the Danube and the storms, which she enjoys best wrapped in a blanket with a book and hot tea.

Favourite book: “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

 

July

On the main protagonist of the book Tarzan of the Apes Pavel the most admires great power. Like many movie actors representing Tarzan, Pavel was actively involved in bodybuilding as a young man. He doesn’t only read books, but also wrote one himself. Today Pavel only sports recreationally.

August

As a child he longed to become a sailor. He shared this dream with his father, who told him stories full of wind in taut sails, adventurous battles between ships and pirates, and bullets that whizz by. Peter loves Scottish Highlands and relaxes best in the mountains, where there are few tourists.

Ivan, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: “Vinnetou” by Karl May

 

September

Ivan's child hero Vinnetou was wise and fair. "He defended his people and at the same time respected the others. For us, the Roma, he was a hero”, says Ivan. He hadn't read a book about Vinnetou yet, but he had seen films about him several times. When he died, everyone was crying at home. "I only read the Bible and Note Bene," says Ivan, a trained musician. After a serious accident caused by an irresponsible driver, Ivan remained strapped to a wheelchair.

Maja, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: “The Garden” by Jiri

The book about children who discovered an abandoned garden, where they meet an old wise dwarf, a mischievous cat and reveal various secrets, was Maja's first book.

Maja likes to relax while listening to music - from classical to punk. She likes books, especially those by Halina Pawlovská, she likes to watch movies and walks with her dog Pajdu.

Jaroslav, NOTA BENE seller

Favourite book: “Long , broad and Sharpsight” folktale

 

November

When Jaroslav was very young, she found the folktale “Long , broad and Sharpsight” amusing and fun. When he grew a little, he appreciated how all three characters complement each other and how great a team they make up.

Barbora, NOTA BENE social worker

Favourite book: “The most beautiful place” by Marie Durickova

 

December

Barbora used to read this book in a cottage in the middle of the forest and the magic of the forest intensified her imagination. Kukulik, the main character of the book, travels the world and visits the rainbow mountains to find out that the most beautiful place is at home. As a social worker in the housing program Barbora believes that the home is the most important place. She also helps NOTA BENE vendors discover the most beautiful corners of the local rivers on the rafting she organizes every year.
